Autism (Autism Spectrum Disorder - ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by specific difficulties and differences in an individual's social communication, interaction, and behavior. It usually emerges in the first 3 years of life and persists throughout life.

🔍 Key Symptoms of Autism

Symptoms in individuals with autism can range from mild to severe. However, difficulties are generally observed in three main areas:

  1. Difficulties in Social Communication and Interaction:

    • Avoiding eye contact

    • Lack of response to the name

    • Failure to use or understand gestures and facial expressions

    • Difficulty in empathy

    • Difficulty playing games or developing interpersonal relationships.

  2. Repetitive Behaviors and Limited Interests:

    • Repetitive movements such as hand clapping and rocking.

    • Constantly playing the same game or having an excessive interest in the same things.

    • Insisting on routines, overreacting to change.

  3. Language and Communication Problems:

    • Delayed speech or no speech at all.

    • Use speech only for specific purposes (e.g., only to express a need)

    • Unusual tone of voice or speaking style (e.g., robotic speech)

Causes of Autism

Although the exact cause of autism is unknown, the following factors are thought to play a role:

  • Genetic factors: The risk may increase if there is a family history of autism.

  • Differences related to brain development

  • Environmental factors: Factors such as infections during pregnancy, pregnancy at an advanced age, and exposure to certain chemicals may play a role (but there is no definitive information on this).

🛑 Autism is not caused by vaccines. This claim has been scientifically refuted.

🧩 What does Autism Spectrum Disorder mean?

The term "spectrum" indicates that autism can manifest at different levels in each individual. Some individuals may show very mild symptoms, while others may require intensive support. Therefore, every autistic individual is different.

💡 Is Autism Treatable?

Autism is not a "disease," but a neurodevelopmental condition, meaning it cannot be completely cured. However:

  • Early diagnosis

  • Education and therapy (especially ABA, speech therapy, sensory integration, social skills training)

This can significantly improve an individual's quality of life.

🌈 Individuals with Autism Can Have Strengths

  • Great memory.

  • Excessive attention to detail

  • Artistic or mathematical talents

  • Exceptional knowledge in specific areas.
